Japan wanted raw materials (oil, metals, lumber, etc.) and were willing to conquer other countries to get it. The US disagreed with that concept. Officially, the US (with the exceptions of our 19th century wars such as the Mexican War of 1846, in which California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexicao became US territory, and possibly the Spanish-American War of 1898, in which we took Cuban "rights", Porto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines...from Spain) believes in PEACEFUL methods of doing business.
The effect of a more protracted war with Japan would have had negative results for both sides. Many thousands would have been killed or wounded on both sides and the resources of both sides would have been seriously depleted.
China did not side with Japan. The attack upon China unified both sides of the Chinese Civil War to defend China from Japan with assistance from the UK and the US.
the decision to drop the bombs caused the Japanese surrender. This prevented massive casualties on both sides in the Operation Downfall invasion of Japan and from an otherwise prolonged war.
Some perspectives: Why did they attack? Who were they? What's going to happen now? Are we at war? How did this happen? How did heavily armored US battleships sink so easily (US Battleships had NEVER been sunk in battle before)? Is this a war with Japan? Or a war against Germany? Or a war against both? Was this a great enemy victory? Or a great enemy error?
They are both islands and democratic countries

Both
Japan: Eliminate the Battlefleet; US: Preserve the Battlefleet.
They are both islands and democratic countries
Both Japan and West Germany adopted a democratic government.
The already planned mutual invasion of Japan by US and USSR. But this was expected to take 1 to 2 more years and many millions of lives on both sides, as well as the division into a communist North Japan and free South Japan. The 2 atomic bombs were very merciful by comparison.
Once Germany surrendered, it was the US against Japan.
