The worst damaged were the USS Arizona and the USS Oklahoma.
The USS West Virginia and the USS California were also sunk, but because the water in the harbor is so shallow they were not completely submerged. Both were raised and repaired and saw much action before the end of the war.
The Oklahoma took numerous torpedo hits, all on the port side of the ship, and rolled over, sticking her upper works in to the mud of the harbor bottom. It toll the Navy until 1947 to get her refloated. She was being towed to the mainland to be scrapped when she started leaking heavily and had to be cut loose. She sank for the final time between Hawaii and California.
No attempt to raise the Arizona was ever made, though two of her main battery gun turrets were removed and emplaced as land batteries in Hawaii. She remains in Pearl Harbor today as a memorial, and is still leaking oil, sixty-eight years after the attack.
The former battleship Utah had been converted into a target ship for gunnery practice. Her guns were removed and her deck covered with heavy timbers. This may have caused the Japanese to mistake her for an aircraft carrier, and concentrate a heavy attack on her. She sank on the opposite side of Ford Island from the Arizona. The Utah and the Arizona are the only two sunken ships remaining in the harbor from the attack.
