The US became involved in the Vietnam War in an attempt to stop the spread of Communism. The US worried that if South Vietnam fell, it would create a domino effect. The war lasted from 1955 to 1975.
North Vietnam won the war.
South Vietnam's surrender to North Vietnam is what ended the Vietnam War. The North Vietnamese had the goal of Vietnamese Unification and the surrender of South Vietnam in 1975 allowed them to achieve that objective.
North Vietnam and South Vietnam. South Vietnam was a democratic republic and North Vietnam had a socialist government headed by a communist regime. North Vietnam was trying to defeat the democracy of South Vietnam and unify the country.
America helped out SOUTH Vietnam. NORTH Vietnam was attacking it.
Not to the "nation" (country) of the US. But the North was attacking the South...and the US was determined to stop them.
North Vietnam = Ho Chi Minh South Vietnam = Ngo Dinh Diem
LBJ started the bombing by attacking North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boat bases in North Vietnam; in retaliation for their attacks on US Navy destroyers in the Tonkin Gulf in August 1964.
A peace agreement was reached with North Vietnam in which the U.S.and Australia would with draw there troops and North Vietnam would stop attacking South Vietnam. After the U.S. and Australia withdrew there troops North Vietnam broke it's agreement and attacked and over ran South Vietnam.

Vo Nguyen Giap
North Vietnam verses South Vietnam. Which is one of the reasons people thought it was a civil war and the US should stay out of it. But that idea is incorrect: A civil war is fought by ONE nation against itself. Just because the word "Vietnam" or "Vietnamese" was in the sentence (North & South Vietnam) does not mean it was one nation. Vietnam was TWO nations; and the North was attacking the South, which was another nation (country), which disqualifies it as a civil war.
There no longer is a North Vietnam, North Vietnam and South Vietnam were joined together after the Vietnam War.
The South Vietemese leaders knew that he would lose the elections. (APEX)
There was no "Vietnam" during the Vietnam War. Communist NORTH Vietnam was attacking non-communist SOUTH Vietnam, and the US was trying to drive the communists out of South Vietnam...trying to stop communist aggression. It's called the Vietnam War because it's a lot easier to say, and less confusing...than to say "South Vietnam War" or "North Vietnam War", so some people go so far as to say the war in Southeast Asia instead.
