One major change during the Roman Republic was imperial expansion. Much of Rome's territorial expansion occurred during the period of the Republic. Rome gained control over all the lands around the Mediterranean Sea.
Another major change was the enrichment of the rich and the impoverishment of the poor. Imperial expansion created great wealth, but this was concentrated in the hands of the rich. The owners of large landed estates benefited from an influx of slaves, who were war captives, during he wars of expansion. Slave labour enabled them to expand their estates. The equites (cavalrymen), a class of bankers, moneylenders and investors in shipping and mining, benefited from an expansion in trade. Many poor peasants, instead, lost their farms. when they come in economic distress, the rich landlords took advantage of this to buy land on the cheap. Many dispossessed peasants went to Rome to eke out a living there, swelling the masses of the poor.
Another change was the creation of the plebeian tribunes who were the representatives of the plebeians (commoners) and the Plebeian Council. These representatives and this assembly became the focus of the struggles of the poor. Over time, the number of types of executive officers of state was increased to five. Originally there were only the consuls, the two annually elected heads of the Republic. In the early Republic the patrician aristocracy monopolised political power. The rich plebeians fought to gain access to the offices of state and power-sharing and eventually succeeded.
