Paul Revere's "Midnight Ride" actually began between 9 and 10 p.m. on the night of April 18, 1775, when Revere was told by lantern signal the British troops were coming in small boats from Boston to arrest John Adams and John Hancock (hence the expression "One if by land; two if by sea") . Revere's role was to warn them and to alert colonial militias in nearby towns.
Riding through present-day Somerville, Arlington, and Medford, Revere warned his fellow citizens of the British advance, spurring others to also deliver warnings. By the end of the night there were some 40 riders warning the local citizenry 'the British are coming!"
The real midnight rider wasn't Paul Revere it was actually 25-year-old mail carrier named Israel Bissel. He rode some 400 miles in 5 days. He alerted local militias that a British Force was marching on Lexington & Concord. Another rider was a 16-year-old girl named Sibyl Ludington, who rode more than 40 miles in 6 hours and called out any army of patriots to halt a British advance at Danbury, Connecticut. Paul Revere's mission was to warn rebel leader Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British soldiers were on the way to arrest them. Paul Revere never saw the signal and he wasn;t the only midnight rider.
Paul Revere shouted "The Regulars are coming" in 1775 when he was on horseback galloping through the streets to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams when the battle of Lexington and Concord were occurring when the British soldiers were coming to attack.
