Commodity production was outsourced, along with democracy backed by military force. The financial success of this system lead to its own growth.

On the one hand Imperialism was the reason for the creation of the American colonies to begin with, as parts of the British Empire. If you mean when did the Americans themselves become Imperialists, the answer is 1898, under the leadership of President William McKinley. McKinley allegedly told a visitor that he was having conversations with God on the subject. The US went to war with Spain in 1898, and captured Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippine Islands. Cuba was immediately made an independent country, but the US kept Puerto Rico and still has it today. The US kept the Philippines until 1947 and these islands were a major reason the US got into WWII. American military bases in the Philippines were the true target when the Japanese attacked in December 1941 - these bases had to be eliminated to deny the US the ability to interfere with Japanese plans for Asian conquest. Pearl Harbor was an extra elaboration, but the Philippines were the indispensable Japanese target. So McKinley may have thought he was talking to God, but it might have been the Devil.
