The date of April 9th 1865 is taken as the notional end of the war. This was the date when Lee's Army of Northern Virginia - the biggest Confederate force - surrendered to Ulysses Grant at Appomattox. Lee was also General-in-Chief of all the Confederate armies.

It was not quite the end of the combat. Joe Johnston's Confederates surrendered to Sherman a fortnight later, and there were a few skirmishes in Texas, the last one in mid-May.

There was no peace-treaty, because there had been no declaration of war in the first place. (Congress did not recognise the Confederacy as a sovereign nation.)

In the South, there are plenty of die-hards who claim that the war hasn't ended yet.
