The term "medieval" is applied to the Middle Ages, which is the period between the fall of the Roman civilization (476 AD) and the Renaissance which was roughly the 14th through 17th centuries.

The Middle Ages are therefore the period of about 800 to 1000 years when Europe existed in a state of feudalism. This was marked by the establishment of ethnic and national realms among the once-primitive tribes, and by the Crusades launched against Islamic occupation of the Holy Lands of the Middle East.
