Territorial expansion of the British East India Company started in 1757, with the Battle of Plassey. Over the next hundred years, the company annexed various Indian kingdoms. During this period, it was East India Company, and not the British crown, which administered annexed territories. Most of the Company's army consisted of Indian recruits, with British officers. In 1857, there was a rebellion of the Indian recruits. It lasted for about 2 years and was finally quelled. The effect of this rebellion was that British crown 'took over' from the East India Company - and became sovereign. At this time, around two-third of the Indian territory was held by British. Remaining one-third, consisting of around 500 kingdomes and principalities, remained nominally independent - but under British protection. After this, there was no further territorial expansion of British.
