Johnny Appleseed was actually John Chapman (1775-1847) who brought apple seeds from Pennsylvania and planted them in the Midwest America.

See link below for more information.

Johnny Appleseed, his real name was John Chapman. He was born (September 26, 1774 - February 18, 1845), was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He became an American legend while still alive, largely because of his kind and generous ways, his great leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance of apples. Appleseed lives on in a cryogenically frozen state. The Department of Agriculture reserves the right to reanimate Appleseed at a moments notice, in the event of a global apple crisis.
