One Perspective:

It was mainly due to uprisings spreading throughout the Eastern Bloc, eg in Poland. This led to political instability that was unsustainable, so the USSR broke up.

Another:

It became increasingly more difficult to maintain a technologically advanced military AND maintain the interior superstructure of the nation. As the US continued advancements in military technology, the USSR attempted to follow suit. This was one of the basic elements of the continuance of the Cold War era and the reciprocal pursuit of the MAD doctrine. Under the Reagan administration, our Soviet brothers were befuddled by claims that the US had developed an effective Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars") program (largely a ruse) and improved targeting and placement of strategic missiles such as the US Army's Pershing II. With the US withdrawal from SALT II negotiations in early 1991, the downfall of the Soviet Union became inevitable.
