The middle ages are the period from the collapse of the Western Roman Empire to the start of the renaissance. The exact dates are somewhat nebulous. Some people put exact figures the period, often the fall of the city of Rome in 410. CE to the fall of the city of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. Others find these specific dates arbitrary, as the "ages" of history represent large changes over time. In general, the period from 500 to 1500 could be considered the middle ages, although elements of the renaissance were being felt in southern Europe before 1500.

The culture that most people think of when they hear the phrase "middle ages" is the high and late middle ages. This is the age of Chaucer, the great cathedrals, knights and tournaments, the great medieval cities, etc. This came at the end of the greater middle ages, say from 1200-1500
