Civilizations that had what is called, "geographic luck (an area that will allow the people living there access to large domestic animals and a good climate suitable for farming)," were able to make advances in farming and then grow enough crops so that some could break away from farming and begin to specailize in other jobs, such as weaving, being a black smith, and so on. I know that this is how more advanced weapons began to be developed, and also that the Spanish in Europe might have been the first. They invented, by trial and error, swords that were stronger, longer, and sharper.

Some experts date steel manufacturing to 1,400 BC in Africa. The Chinese

used steel, as far back as 200 BC, to successfully manufacture

weapons. However, these were primitive steel making ages.

It wasn't until the 1600s that steel making became a large scale

operation.
