After the Alamo he organized a unit that served as the rear guard of the Texan army. He then commanded a unit that fought at San Jacinto, and oversaw the Mexican army's return to Mexico. He would accept the Mexican surrender of San Antonio and serve as the San Antonio military commander. He directed the burial services for the remains of the Alamo defenders. He volunteered on ranging expeditions providing protection against Comanches and Mexicans. He was Mayor/Sheriff-Judge of San Antonio and became a Texas Senator. He served six years in the Mexican military. After this he became a rancher in Floresville. He became a Bexar County constable and an election-precinct chairman and later a Wilson county judge. In old age, he would live with his son in Nuevo Laredo, where he died in 1890. DLS.
