In Egyptian mythology Ra didn't live anywhere. By day he would be the sun. By night he traveled south down the Nile River towards the place where Anubis would way your heart to see if it's weight matched the weight of the feather of life. It was an Epic struggle of life and death on the way there every night. He did this to show the way to Anubis for the people who got lost on the way there.

The Egyptians could live without Amon-Ra (aka Ra), but not for very long. The god of chaos, Apophis, would eventually figure out Ra's absense and would try to strike. The absense of Ra would also create havoc in the afterlife. The souls of the dead would not be able to find their way to the place in which the weighing of the heart was conducted without Ra's guidance. So basically, if Ra were to be gone, the Egyptians would suffer badly.
