On straw

2nd Answer,

The typical peasant home in a village was a simple building of one or two rooms. If there was a separate second room this was probably used as sleeping quarters. Mattresses were very basic, and usually stuffed with straw. They were not necessarily on the floor. Unless a family was very poor it was not unreasonable for them to have a bed stand for the mattress.
