The Greeks knew of the cause and the knowlege was contained in the Great library in Alexandria, but the knowledge was lost when the library was burned.

After millions of victims in the 15th and 16th century in Europe, Venice celebrated the victory over "Black Death" with the Venice Carneval. It was also a clear sign to celebrate life again, after years of sorrow and disease.
