The first battles of the Revolutionary War were around Boston, Massachusetts. The towns of Lexington and Concord refused to allow English soldiers to enter the towns to search for weapons. The battles took place on April 19, 1775, 15 months before the Declaration of Independence.

Although the casualties were small by the standards of war, with 49 Americans dead and 5 missing, and 73 killed with 53 missing on the English side, these battles were extremely important. The first shot was called the 'shot heard round the world' because these battles not only led to American independence, but also encouraged other independence movements in every part of the world. This was the first step in dismantling the whole European system of dividing the world into colonies.
