Naismith derives from the Old English 'cnif smit' or 'knifesmith'. There are many theories as to what the occupation of knifesmith was, but many believe that it is similar to the word 'swordsmith', or one proficient with a sword. The knifesmith would be a soldier carrying a short sword. It originated in roughly tenth century Scotland.
