the majority of Irish immigrants settled in the major cities of the east coast - this was closer to their point of arrival, and also the source of a great deal of work. most preferred not to work in agriculture as this was deemed to hold the risk of famine and or poverty - the main cause most left Ireland in the first place. as time passed many moved to cities in the midlands and south and to places such as butte Montana but again mostly for mining/industrial work.
