He was respected by all who knew him because of his fine moral character. He loved the United States and used his influence to prevent the division of the states. He was opposed both to slavery and to secession. It was very difficult for him to decide whether to stay with the Union or go with his native state, Virginia. He was offered the position of field commander of the United States army.
