The US never declared war on Germany. Following Japan's attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, the US declared war on Japan on December 8. On December 11, Japan's ally, Germany, declared war on the US, and so did Italy a few hours later. In all of WWII, this was the only time Germany actually declared war against any nation. Ordinarily the Germans just invaded your country, and let you figure out you were at war. Since Germany could not get at the US to invade as she had done her neighbors, Hitler had to do it the old fashioned way.
