The first battles were string of devastating losses for the US. The Japanese sneak attack on Dec. 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor was the first. Two waves of aircraft attacked and destroyed many planes and ships before they were capable of responding. Soon after that the Japanese attacked the Philippines by land, sea, and air and eventually drove the Americans from the islands and captured over 10,000 American soldiers. The Japanese also attacked and conquered some smaller American islands in the Pacific. The Germans were initially quite successful at using submarines to sink American shipping off the Atlantic coast.
The US quickly recovered from these losses and began to mount an effective counter attack. In May of 1942 The US fought a naval battle in the Coral Sea in which the US lost a large carrier and Japanese lost a smaller one, but the Japanese did retreat. The first major action against Germany came in November of 1942 with the beginning of the liberation of North Africa.
