Slavery in the United States began prior to the Antebellum Period.

The Antebellum Period in American history is generally considered to be the period after the War of 1812 to the start of the Civil War in 1861. During this time, the country’s economy began to divide; in the north was manufacturing as England's Industrial Revolution reached the United States, while in the south, a cotton boom (with much shipped to the UK) based on slave labor made plantations the center of the economy.

However the business of exporting slaves from Africa peaked in the middle-late 1700's, as slaves were sent to Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. But with England and the other European powers banning slavery in the early 1800's, the American South remained the only market.
