The Continental Congress
The list contained the grievances of the colonists, and the list helps explain why it became necessary for the colonists to seek independence.
Bicameral legislature (The General Assembly). Oldest continuous English speaking law making body in the world.
In 1619, the General Assembly of Virginia was composed of two groups: the House of Burgesses, which represented the colonists, and the Governor's Council, which consisted of appointed officials. This assembly marked the first legislative body in English America, allowing settlers to have a voice in governance. The House of Burgesses was made up of elected representatives from various settlements, while the Governor's Council served as advisors to the governor. Together, these two groups laid the foundation for representative government in the colonies.
