The independence of Brazil occurred on September 7, 1822, when Dom Pedro I, the son of the King of Portugal, declared Brazil's independence from Portuguese rule. Tensions had been rising due to the centralization of power by the Portuguese crown and demands for autonomy from Brazilian elites. The declaration was marked by the famous cry "Independência ou Morte!" ("Independence or Death!").
