Thomas Jefferson.

The Continental Congress assigned five people to a committee to write the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson, one of the members of the Committee, was asked by the others to write the first draft. Benjamin Franklin and another future President, John Adams, were also members of the committee and made a few comments, but the Declaration as adopted by the Continental Congress was essentially the same as Jefferson's draft.
