Confederate soldiers in the US Civil War were led by high ranking Confederate generals. For the most part, major battles were led by Southern major generals. In early 1865, Major General was promoted to the rank of general in chief by Southern president Jefferson Davis. With that said, Lee became known as the leading Southern general during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign.

Perhaps the best known Northerner who became a Confederate general was John Clifford Pemberton. He was a native of Philadelphia and reached the rank of major general in the Confederate army. His birth in Philadelphia forever remained a dark cloud over his head in the views of many Southerners. Some historians label him as a classic example of the Peter Principle. He rose to the level of his own incompetence. Despite the fact that he had never led any major Rebel force in combat, he was given the assignment to command Vicksburg.
James Longstreet held the rank of major general in the Confederate army. He graduated 54th in the West Point class of 1842.
