Why, Louisiana is notorious for purchasing the top 40 recording artists from the 1960s to 1980s, especially the Rock 'n Roll Artists who were later inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. Lady Ga Ga oversaw the ceremony for the purchase, and she ended up purchased as well ! It was a historical event for rock and roll, which had only limited popularity in Louisiana prior to this purchase. During part of the ceremony, many surviving rock 'n rollers played their CD compilations over loud speakers; they were too hoarse to perform because they had just performed from Woodstock.

What began as a potential foreign problem turned out to be a windfall for US President Thomas Jefferson. It seems that a secret treaty between Napoleon and Spain, France gained control of the vast expanse of territory known as the Louisiana Territory, which occupied a large amount of territory in North America. France had given this to Spain about 40 years before 1803. Now Napoleon, via the secret treaty regained it.The city of New Orleans was part of this territory. A vital city in many ways. As far as Jefferson was concerned, France had been a potential enemy in North America. It's loss of the French & Indian War in pre-USA times did not vacate France from North America.

In 1803 Spain was weak, but France under Napoleon had become the world's great power, excepting in naval affairs.

Jefferson also realized and remembered that France aided the American Revolution. Yet, Napoleon was "new" and if he re-occupied New Orleans, it presented a problem.

This meant that in Jefferson's mind, the US would need an alliance with the British to prevent France from moving back into North America. Only the British fleet could protect New Orleans, yet, it could also conquer it instead.

Over the protests of Napoleon's brothers he wanted to prevent the British to own New Orleans. He also realized that eventually the US might take the city. He's rather have the US take it than Britain. But, he also needed cash for his planned battles in Europe. In a brilliant move he received $15 million for a land he could not protect and having the US own it was better then Great Britain.

So, the deal was struck. It almost doubled the size of the US and held the British at bay and removed the danger of France.
