The settlement in Hartford, Connecticut, was founded in 1636 by a group of Puritan settlers led by Thomas Hooker. They migrated from the Massachusetts Bay Colony seeking more fertile land and greater religious freedom. Hooker is often credited as the leader of this group, which established Hartford as one of the first English settlements in the area.
