North-western Africa had been taken over by the Vandals, Hispania (France and Portugal) and south-western France by the Visigoths, eastern Gaul bu the Burgundians, Alsace (in not-eastern France) and the Swiss Plateau by the Alemanni. The last emperor was deposed by Odocacer, a Germanic leader of the Germanic troops of the Roman army in Italy. He styled himself as the king of Italy instead of emperor and gave the imperial title of the western part of the empire to the eastern Roman emperor. Thirteen years late Zeno told his ally, Theoderic the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths that he could have Italy if he deposed Odocaer, who was defeated after a four year war. Theoderic then established the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths which covered Italy, Illyricum (most of the former Yugoslavia) and Pannonia (eastern Austria and western Hungary)
