The West blames the Islamic extremism fostered by Iran and other countries, as personified by Al Qaeda and the late Osama bin Laden. Many in Islamic countries viewed it as a response to Middle East policies, especially those of the US, that exploit the region's oil and seek to take power away from the religious authorities there.

In any event, since the US is unwilling to allow terrorism to influence foreign policy, the likely result is even greater pressure to remove Islamic governments from influence in the world.
