In the first world war(ww1) in 1914-1918 the countries that were 8.

Britain, France, Russia, United States (eventually) fought against Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Italy.....

Most of those dominant powers had overseas Empires, most famously and most importantly the British Commonwealth. In most cases the countries of the Commonwealth and of the Empires of other states contributed troops to their respective sides.

Also, there were a handful of lesser states in Europe mainly who were involved. For example, Belgium fought on the side of the Triple Entente, whilst Bulgaria fought with the Triple Alliance.
