In addition, Rudolf Hoess (not to be confused with Rudolf Hess), who had been Commandant of Auschwitz from 1940-43 was tried in Warsaw and hanged at Auschwitz in April 1947. Some of the worst criminals escaped to Latin America, where Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil gave them asylum.
