The Tea Act was a law passed by the Parliament of Great Britain in 1773.
Smuggling of tea from Dutch traders had become a major problem in North America, and the British East India Company had to clear its massive surplus of tea. The reason why smuggling was so profitable was because the East India Company paid taxes in London, then sold it to other firms. The Tea Act got rid of these obligations, which made directly imported English tea much cheaper than smuggled tea.
But behind this façade, if Americans willingly bought the cheap but legitimate tea from the East India Company, they would be paying taxes to the British - which the British government believed would legitimise taxing Americans. Americans didn't want to pay taxes to an overseas government where they weren't represented.
In the end, the colonists saw through the implicit reasons of the Tea Act, and the Tea Act eventually led to the Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773) and escalated to the American War of Independence (1775).
