North Vietnam, by choice, stood alone. This was, among other reasons, a strategic move. By standing alone against the most powerful nation on earth, and with the use of world wide television...the North Vietnamese counted on gaining "world sympathy"; to an extent, it worked.

North Vietnam did however recieve war supplies from Red China and the Soviet Union, as well as from Warsaw Pact nations. Additionally, Cuba, the USSR, and Communist China trained North Viet MiG fighter pilots in their home countries. Such training normally lasted about 2 years. However for Cuba that was a special "air attack on naval warships" operation and Cuban technicians may have arrived in North Vietnam to prepare the North Viet Air Force to attack American warships...which was done in 1972 against the US warships USS Higbee and USS Oklahoma City (destroyer and light cruiser respectively). The destroyer was heavily damaged in the attack and the cruiser only recieved light damage. Two NVAF MiG17s did the job, "some" USN personnel state that at least one MiG was downed during the attack...North Vietnam denies it; they state that two NVAF MiG17s took off and two returned.
