General John C. Pemberton, commander of the Vicksburg garrison, last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi.
Joseph E. Johnston, overall Confederate commander in the West.
Ulysses Grant, Union General charged with capturing Vicksburg.
W.T.Sherman, Grant's supporter and close friend.
John McClernand, a politician in uniform who had got secret permission from Lincoln to raise a private army and proceed down the Mississippi to take Vicksburg.
For the Union, U.S. Grant and his good friend Sherman, reinforced by John McClernand who had been allowed to raise a private army by Lincoln.
For the Confederates, the Vicksburg garrison commander, General John C. Pemberton, who received conflicting orders from President Jefferson Davis, telling him to hold this key river-port at any cost, and his local area commander Joseph E. Johnston, urging him to evacuate the place and save his army.
Grant had known Pemberton in the old army, and may have had the advantage of knowing his opponent's strengths and weaknesses.
Good question.
Grant was supposed to be planning his own campaign, proceeding down the left bank of the Mississippi, to attack the town from the open country to the East. Meanwhile Lincoln had allowed a politician-in-uniform (McClernand) to raise a private army to march down the right bank, and if Grant wanted to control that army, he would have to switch to the right bank too. From that side, the high-lying town of Vicksburg was virtually impossible to attack, and Grant had to exercise much ingenuity to cross the river downstream without the enemy noticing.
The Confederate garrison commander was General John C. Pemberton, and he reported to his area commander, the astute Joseph E. Johnston. When the campaign got tough, Johnston realised that the town was doomed to fall, and urged Pemberton to evacuate the place and save his army. But Pemberton was also being urged by his President, Jefferson Davis, to save Vicksburg at all costs. That is why Pemberton could not concentrate on one steady course of action, and was driven into his lines for a five-week siege, ending with the inevitable surrender of 30,000 prisoners.
the major people involved in the battle of Vicksburg were; Jefferson Davis, General William T. Sherman, General Robert E. Lee, General Ulysses S. Grant, General John McClernard, and many more people.
Pemberton commanded the southern Army of Misissippi. Grant commanded the U.S. Army of the Tennessee.
U.S. Grant.
It gave him important new credibility, and made him the obvious choice for General-in-Chief, as Halleck proved himself increasingly unsuited to the top job.
The Battle for Vicksburg was actually the culmination of the Vicksburg campaign that involved fight and maneuver before the final siege of the city, which itself lasted from May 18 to July 4, 1863. The commanders were Major General Grant,U.S.A. vs. Lt. General Pemberton,C.S.A. The operations against Vicksburg actually started in 1862. It was a long, drawn out, bloody affair.
Not to count the Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought and concluded one day before the surrendering of Vicksburg, the major battle fought after was that of Chickamauga, on Sept. 19-20, 1863.

No, losing control of the Mississippi River was the most major strategic loss of the war.
No, Major General George Pickett was in command of a division of Longstreet's I Corps in the east with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. At the time of the Vicksburg Campaign he would have been either in Virginia or later in Pennsylvania fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg.
