The best one by far was Major General Andrew Jackson, but, he was politically of the wrong faction, in the judgment of Thomas Jefferson and of James Madison, who was Jefferson's protege and president when the US declared war on Great Britain. So, Jackson sat at home through almost all the war, awaiting a call to duty, while others fumbled and mismanaged and almost managed to lose the war. The US was extremely fortunate that Napoleon Bonaparte had the British very busy in Europe. Other US generals include peacable old Henry Dearborn, a doddering relic of the Revolution, puttering about on the Niagara front, where he was reluctant to strike a blow, for fear the British might retaliate. Alexander Macomb was a good one, the "Hero of Plattsburg" for his victory there. William Henry Harrison did some good work on the frontier against the Indian allies of the British. John Stricker was a general of the Maryland Militia who gave an able performance during the Baltimore campaign.
James Madison as President was the Commander in Chief.
The commanders in the field were Dearborn, Brown Scott and Jackson.
