not all, but part of the original settlers were Puritan. but in actuality, the Colony had its own Magna Charter, which was NOT about religion, but about the community as if it were the state already.
I am not sure if you are asking about the Purtians, but will answer as if you did. The Purtians were a very strict faith and part of it was to take part in their colony a man had to be a member of the church. It does seem a contradiction, but many things are. Jefferson stated " all men are created equal " but owned slaves. The Purtians felt that they wanted to worship their way and part of that was to control who was active in their decisions.
He did not agree with punishing people for breaking the rules of the church.

After the Purtians left the Netherlands they came to the New World to be able to live as they wished. Winthrop put all the political power in the hands of the stockholders and they had been critical of the Church of England. The reason they are called Purtians is that they wanted to purify the church of England from within. This brought strong resistance from the church, so to move to someplace else where they could do what they wanted was a logical thought. They believed that theirs was the true faith and that others were the work of the devil. They were not a tolerant people.
The Age of Reason was a period that came after the Purtians, seeing that in many respects, the Purtians were not 'reasonable' (Salem Witch Trials being a great example). The Great Awakening attempted to revive those strict and religious 'Puritan' sentiments. However, this kind of strict moral code could not last forever, and eventually softened. The Age of Reason marked the beginning of The Enlightenment, characterized by a rational approach to the world (think of all of the major scientific minds and philosophers in the late 18th century). Using logic, rather than ascribing everything to God's will as had been done during the time of the Puritans/The Great Awakening.

Thousands of Purtians didn’t come to the New World. The Mayflower held 102 people and 60 of them were Purtians from the same village in England.
