Christopher Columbus called the Bahamas the East Indies because he thought he reached the land east of India. He didn't know North and South America were even there. His original idea was that he was going to prove that the earth was round and sail around it. When he landed in the Bahamas, he thought that he was in the east, meaning east of India.
