The sense of why they immigrated falls under the push and pull theory. Push meaning, why Europeans left from Europe, and the pull meaning why Europeans wanted to go to America.

The most popular reasons at the the time for the "push" was bad economic conditions, no religious freedom, and forced Immigration.

The most popular reasons at the time for the "pull" were America was known as the "New Land." There wasn't much colonization and such going on, so obviously newcomers could begin their own life and lifestyles in America.

To explain the push reasons....

1) The cities were over populated with poor. Wealthy landowners had no room to enlarge their land and begin using new techniques. They wanted to get rid of peasants who didn't work that weel either.

2) The king at the time in Europe was forcing everyone into a religion not everyone agreed in. When particular churches were converted into the religion the king wanted and such, crowds of 2000+ people fled.

3) Slavery. Many people in the American colonies wanted new workers and such, so they would pay for the trip and all for people in Europe to be sent over to work for them.

To explain the pull reasons....

1) "New Land." This intrigued many in Europe, and their desire for a new and better lifestyle pulled them into coming.

2) Colonization. Groups of people with specific religions, particular beliefs, etc, wanted to live freely in their own way. America at the time, seemed to be the best place to put this plan into action.
