first answer: They retreated to avoid being surrounded and captured, or wiped out by Soviet forces.
second improved answer: The Germans (military & civilian) feared immediate retaliation for the terrible things that Germans had done in the Soviet Union. The Germans had brutally murdered millions of civilians in Eastern Europe & Russia, and they had looted, pillaged & burned much property there.

The Soviet Union did not build the Berlin Wall, it was built by and on the order of the government of the German Democratic Republic ('DDR', called 'East Germany' by the English-Language press). It was built to stop citizens of the German Democratic Republic emigrating to West Berlin and from there to The Federal Republic of Germany (called 'West Germany' by the English-Language press). The border between the DDR and the Federal republic had already been closed. In order to stop emigration it was also necessary to close the border between East Berlin (part of the DDR), and West Berlin.

May I respectfully suggest the following: The Last Nazis by Perry Biddiscombe Charleston, S.C. Tempus Publishing, Inc. 2000 ISBM: 0-7524-1793-2 Richard V. Horrell WW 2 Connections.com At the end of WW2 Poland's borders were pushed westwards into areas like East Prussia, Pomerania and Silesia - areas that were populated by Germans and that didn't have Polish minorities. The Germans were expelled. The German-speaking population of Czechoslovakia was expelled. Large numbers of ethnic Germans were expelled from all the Eastern Bloc countries. Expelling people, especially on this scale, involves hardship and deaths. The (German) League of Expellees claims that 11.7 million Germans were expelled and that about 2 million died in the process. This second figure (of about 1 in 6) seems high to me, but that doesn't alter the fact that many perished. In addition, many German soldiers died in Soviet capitivity after WW2, and an estimated 5,000-9,000 in American captivity in Europe. I'll see if I can recommend reading, but much of the literature is NOT reliable and some of it is propaganda. Joncey

Firstly, The largest proportion of tourists to Mallorca are Germans, This is an incentive for the inhabitants to concentrate on German instead of English. Secondly There are a lot of retired Germans living on the island as well as a lot of Germans who have migrated there to work in the tourist industry. It also depends on where in Mallorca you are. Some areas mostly receive British tourists and some mostly receive Germans. They usually don't tend to mix though.

Yes. High German (which is the German spoken in Germany) is the official language of Austria. Nearly all Austrians can speak High German, but a minority in the more rural, mountainous areas speak local dialects of German that are quite different from High German. Some Germans find these dialects of German difficult or impossible to understand.
