All immigrants who wanted to go NYC had to stop at Ellis Island, to make sure they were okay to come into the USA. Before arriving at Ellis Island, many immigrants first landed at various ports in the United States, such as New York City and Boston, where they often disembarked from their ships. However, Ellis Island itself was the primary entry point for immigrants arriving by sea to the U.S. from 1892 to 1954. Prior to Ellis Island's opening, immigrants typically went through processing at Castle Garden, which was the first official immigrant processing center in New York City.
