What an odd mix of metaphors!

When John Kerry was in the Navy, he served for about 2 months in Viet Nam, aboard small river patrol boats that were sometimes called "Swift Boats". Kerry was discharged after receiving three trivially-minor wounds. (There were numerous allegations that Kerry's third "wound", which got him out of Viet Nam, had been self-inflicted.) After returning home, Kerry testified to the Senate that he himself, and many other people in the Navy, had committed countless war crimes and acts of torture against Vietnamese civilians.

Kerry was later elected to government office eventually becoming a Senator, generally opposed to the US Military. IN 2004, when Kerry ran for the Presidency, he tried to run on his military record, claiming during the Democratic Convention that he was "Reporting For Duty!". Unfortunately, many of his former Swift Boat colleagues remembered his claims of war crimes and opposed his candidacy, under the rubric of "Swift Boat Veterans For Truth". They were, after all, the people that Kerry had slandered 30 years before.

So if Kerry had thrown his Swift Boat "buddies" under the bus during the Senate investigations in the late 1970's, they certainly had no qualms about returning the favor in 2004.

The Other Perspective

Your question implies that there exists a fact that John Kerry threw his fellow Swiftboat comrades under a bus- a phrase meaning to sacrifice a friend or ally for selfish reasons.

After returning from Vietnam John Kerry became a critic of the war. He testified before the U. S. Senate to atrocities committed by U. S. troops, He testified to cases of of rape, razed villages, amputated ears and limbs, killing of women and children and the ravaging of villages. We know that type of action took place from other accounts and trials from that time period. Any person, military or civilian, who could deny war crimes took place in Vietnam is living in denial. We don't know to what degree those crimes were committed only that they did happen. Testifying to that is not throwing fellow soldiers "under the bus". The Vietnam War was a horror for both soldiers and civilians. Yet, we condemn soldiers in other countries who perpetrate such atrocities on vulnerable, unprotected victims of war.

Many veterans were extremely angry about John Kerry's anti-war activities when he gave that testimony about the conduct of some members of the American military in that war. Political observers have viewed this as the true reason behind the Swift Boat campaign in 2004. Also, more Purple Hearts were awarded to wounded soldiers and sailors during the Vietnam War than in any other war time. A review of Navy reports from that time revealed that rules governing Purple Hearts did not depend on the severity of a wound and many other Swift boat soldiers, not only Kerry, won them for slight wounds.

The campaign of the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" was later discredited as many of the reports on which they based their claims were determined to be unsubstantiated and some proven to be untrue in many cases. Kerry's defenders that included almost all of his crew mates have stated on the record that the Swift Boater's allegations are untrue. In fact, the term is now most often used as a pejorative meaning a smear campaign:

  • To have your credibility attacked by an a dishonest political machine.
  • To powerfully blindside and undermine someone with questionable attacks on their patriotism, character or background.
  • To trick or cheat, to divert by deception.
  • To undermine character and credibility, no matter whether the charges are accurate.

There has been so much fiction published regarding John Kerry's service that it is difficult to discern what is true.

Oh, dude, there are so many ways to spell Kerry! You've got your classic "K-e-r-r-y," but then you can mix it up with "C-a-r-e-y," "K-a-r-i," or even throw in a silent "Q" if you're feeling fancy. Like, as long as you're not spelling it "K-a-r-e-e," you're probably good to go.
