A review of Navy reports from that time revealed that rules governing Purple Hearts did not depend on the severity of a wound and many other Swift boat soldiers, not only Kerry, won them for slight wounds.
The campaign of the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" was later discredited as many of the reports on which they based their claims were determined to be unsubstantiated and some proven to be untrue in many cases. Kerry's defenders that included almost all of his crew mates have stated on the record that the Swift Boater's allegations are untrue. In fact, the term is now most often used as a pejorative meaning a smear campaign:

- To powerfully blindside and undermine someone with questionable attacks on their patriotism, character or background.
- To trick or cheat, to divert by deception.
- To undermine character and credibility, no matter whether the charges are accurate.
