- US Military projections of an invasion of Japan estimated tens of millions of casualties, most of which would have been Japanese civilians. By some lights, the atomic bomb seemed the more humane solution.
- Some of those casualties would have been US soldiers. The chance to possibly end the war immediately without throwing away more US lives was very attractive.
There was also a general sense in the US that Japan "deserved" it for the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor: the old adage about trouble.... "Don't start none, won't be none" was considered to apply.
