These s have some truth about them but lets leave out nationalistic pride out and stick to the realities of what happened.

If you believe that you can win a war with two bombs alone you are sadly mistaken, in the end infantry still have to be used.

the question is 'why did the US bomb Nagasaki?'

the geographical reason nagasaki was chosen was

  1. yes it is a port of minor military importance (justification)
  2. it had a population of around 250, 000 people (acceptable civilian casualties in American public opinion)
  3. it is surrounded by hills (the bowl shape gives the best devastation effect for a nuclear weapon)
  4. it had been left untouched by conventional and fire bombing prior to the use of the nuclear weapon

the political reason nagasaki was bombed

the war was all but over japan, had asked for a conditional surrender in June 1945 but was refused. the conditions were that the Emperor be maintained as head of state and that they be allowed to keep the 4 home islands as they feared they would be over run by the Soviet Union in the north. America refused on a number of grounds

  1. she wanted exact revenge for the embarrassment of Pearl Harbour
  2. with the war already won in Europe where the soviets now had a strong foothold America need to show the soviets it had and was prepared to use the bomb (the start of the cold war)
  3. still a lot was unknown about the Atom bomb and testing it on humans for the affects had not been done so the Japanese were the guinea pigs. their war crimes had already been well publicized so public opinion would accept a test on them, especially if under the guise of a war ender

Incidently, on the signing of the unconditional surrender, japan was indeed allowed to keep its emperor and home islands.

To end the war. The Japanese generals would not accept defeat and were hoping that the US would not accept a million or more casualties by invading the home islands. The two nuclear blasts showed that we did not need to invade.

I used to use the pat and accepted of avoiding great casualties until I did more researce into the matter. Leading military and scientific people were dead against us using the bomb. It was agreed that the Japanese were finished as a fighting force and that unleashing the bomb was unnecessary. From what I can gather, the Manhatten Project to build the bomb had required so much money and time that to not us the bomb was unheard of to other factions of the military political leadership. In other words it had "a life of its own",and they were determined come hell or high water to use it. We did try several times to ask the Japanese to surrender to no avail because of the militarists that ruled the country. After bomb number one -- NO Surrender. After bomb number two-- Surrender. The Emperor finally came out of his delusion of victory and said enough! It is horrifying to read accounts of people burned alive and the rest wishing they were dead. It is terrible that America did this to their fellow man. But one general said in retrospect--Always remember they started it.

I have done some research on this topic recently and came up with very interesting facts. There are many reasons for the dropping of the bomb, such as a show of power to the Soviet Union, also, we were afraid to hold on to the second bomb too long because we didn't know anything about it.

Nagasaki was just a precaution in case Hiroshima did not work.

Nagasaki is a seaport on west Kyushu in Southwest Japan

Nagasaki was to intimidate Russia.

The US wanted to quickly end World War II by defeating Japan, but was afraid that an invasion would lead to high casualties. So President Truman decided to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and when Japan still refused to surrender, the US dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki.
