Roosevelt didn't want a WW3.

The League of Nations had failed largely because the U.S. refused to support it (although also for many other reasons) so that when Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany flouted the League it didn't have the muscle to stare them down.

At the end of WW2 the US was by far the most powerful nation on earth because we had grown during the war while every other major player had been beaten to a pulp (even the victors) and because only we had nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union was clearly going to become the other greatest power, and would inevitably acquire nuclear weapons. Their tanks and ours were sitting across an invisible (for then; soon it would become the Iron Curtain) line from each other across Europe. A credible international forum for settling disputes before they could escalate was desperately needed.
