to look for gold
Spanish explorers in the New World did more than explore. Their mission as "conquistadors" were to battle & defeat Native Americans in order to control large parts of North & South America. The "conquistadors" were able to steal silver and gold and send these precious metals back to Spain. Two famous conquistadors were Cortes and Pizarro.
They were basically searching for gold to send back to Spain to enrich the king. The word Conquistador means conqueror in Spanish, which relates to genocide they committed on the native Americans when they came to the America's and eventually enslaved the survivors.
He was the Spanish conquistador who conquered Mexico for Spain by defeating the Mayan Empire. This cannot be a minor edit.. the wrong Native American empire is named. Well, um, they didn't. Spain is a country right next to Portugal. Here's a handy map: http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/europe/iberian.gif As you can see, Spain has no more reason to explore Portugal than Americans have to explore Canada.
King Ferdinand of Spain sent Amerigo Vespucci on voyages to explore the New World, specifically to the coast of South America. Vespucci's voyages helped contribute to the understanding of the geography of the Americas, and he is considered one of the early explorers of the region.
