During WW II, Germany invaded many countries in Europe and seized control of those countries, forming a large European empire which they called Festung Europa (fortress Europe). The wished to add England to their empire. Because there was no direct land route to England from mainland Europe, due to the English channel (for which there was no tunnel then, although there is one now) Germany couldn't just roll their tanks into England the way they did in France and Poland, so they thought that if they bombed England, they could persuade England to surrender, in order to get Germany to stop bombing them. Of course as it turned out, England was a a lot more stubborn than that.
