Columbus was trying to reach Asia through the West, but Portugal's King already knew that by sailing west, he would find land in which he had no interest.

There is also a theory that states that Columbus was working for the Portuguese in order to send the Spanish to the wrong place so that the Portuguese could have more time to reach Asia without having to worry about competition. BTW they all wanted to go to India because it was the center of the spice trade.
